Allegory

Allegory is Washington D.C.’s hidden cocktail sanctuary—an immersive, art-filled bar that merges storytelling, social consciousness, and top-tier mixology. Located behind a nondescript library inside the Eaton Hotel, Allegory invites guests to step into a world where literature, politics, and craft cocktails collide. It’s more than a bar—it’s an intellectual and sensory journey fueled by powerful narratives and boundary-pushing drinks.
History & Concept
Opened in 2018, Allegory was conceived as a space where stories come to life through both visual art and flavor. Helmed by award-winning bartender Paul Gonzalez, the bar is rooted in activism and representation, channeling historical and cultural narratives into its drinks. The overarching theme of Allegory is resistance—symbolized in its mural inspired by Alice in Wonderland, where civil rights icons and modern struggles replace whimsical fantasy. The concept places equal weight on exceptional cocktails and meaningful conversation.
Design & Atmosphere
The design of Allegory is evocative and atmospheric. Entering through a bookshelf-lined hallway, guests arrive in a moody, intimate space illuminated by dramatic, low lighting and surrounded by a bold mural by artist Erik Thor Sandberg. The artwork reimagines Alice’s journey through a socio-political lens, lending depth and gravity to the space. Velvet seating, antique fixtures, and a copper-topped bar create a vintage-meets-avant-garde ambiance. The vibe is sophisticated yet contemplative—perfect for deep conversation over complex cocktails.
Allegory Menu
The Allegory menu is a multi-layered exploration of flavors, cultures, and eras. Its rotating selection of signature cocktails and curated small bites reads like a literary anthology—each offering crafted with a narrative and purpose. The menu bridges global spirits with local ingredients, challenging guests to taste, think, and engage.
Cocktail Menu
Allegory’s cocktails are highly conceptual and rooted in storytelling. Highlights include:
- The Storyteller. Bourbon, pistachio orgeat, lemon, and bitters—rich and layered like a good novel.
- Redacted. A mysterious mix of mezcal, ancho chili, lime, and activated charcoal, symbolizing censored histories.
- The Archivist. Cognac, fig, black tea, and amaro, capturing depth and complexity.
- Through the Looking Glass. Vodka, hibiscus, rose water, and lemon—a whimsical floral escape.
- Lynching Memorial. A dark rum-based cocktail paying tribute to historical memory, built with gravity and finesse.
Each cocktail is a statement—crafted with house-made syrups, clarified juices, and striking presentation.
Food Menu
While Allegory focuses primarily on cocktails, its food offerings are carefully curated to complement the drinks and narrative tone:
- Charcuterie Board. Local meats and cheeses with pickled vegetables and house mustard.
- Pork Belly Sliders. Glazed with gochujang sauce and served on soft brioche buns.
- Crispy Brussels. Tossed in a maple-balsamic reduction with chili flakes.
- Fried Oyster Mushrooms. A vegan-friendly delight with Southern flair.
- Bar Nuts & Olives. Spiced, smoked, and ideal for nibbling while sipping a complex drink.
The food is intentionally simple but flavorful, allowing the drinks and setting to take center stage.
Price Level
Allegory offers a high-end experience with prices to match the artistic and mixological craftsmanship. Cocktails generally range between $18–$24, and small plates from $10–$20. While premium in price, the depth of concept and execution provides value beyond the drink itself—it’s an experience worth the investment.
