Attaboy

Attaboy is a globally celebrated cocktail bar tucked discreetly behind an unmarked door on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Known for its no-menu concept and masterfully crafted drinks, Attaboy delivers a personalized, immersive cocktail experience that has redefined modern bartending. With an unwavering focus on quality, creativity, and connection, the bar remains a pilgrimage site for cocktail enthusiasts from around the world.
History & Concept
Attaboy was established in 2012 by legendary bartenders Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy, alumni of the iconic Milk & Honey. They transformed the original Milk & Honey space into something new — still rooted in the principles of craft and hospitality, but now with a more spontaneous, individualized spirit. The concept is simple yet revolutionary: no printed menu. Guests describe their preferences, and the bartenders respond with tailor-made cocktails, creating an experience that is equal parts art and intuition.
Design & Atmosphere
Unassuming from the outside and intimate within, Attaboy’s interior channels speakeasy minimalism with industrial-chic touches. Dim lighting, raw brick walls, and a narrow bar lined with vintage glassware create a moody, relaxed ambiance. The space is intentionally small, with just enough seating for a handful of guests at a time, allowing for focused, personal interactions between patrons and bartenders.
Attaboy Menu
The Attaboy menu is entirely conversational and customized. There is no physical list of drinks — instead, patrons engage in a brief dialogue with the bartender, who crafts a unique cocktail based on flavor preferences, spirits, and mood. This approach encourages experimentation and fosters an intimate connection between guest and mixologist. In addition to bespoke cocktails, guests may enjoy seasonal bar snacks, though food is not a primary focus.
Cocktail Menu
Though there’s no fixed list, Attaboy’s cocktail repertoire includes a mix of classics, modern signatures, and spontaneous creations. Some notable examples:
- Penicillin. A smoky-sweet classic created by Sam Ross himself: blended scotch, lemon juice, honey-ginger syrup, and an Islay float.
- Paper Plane. Another iconic invention by Ross, featuring equal parts bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino, and lemon juice — bright, balanced, and bitter-sweet.
- Bartender’s Choice. Whatever you’re in the mood for, whether spirit-forward, citrusy, herbal, or smoky — your cocktail will be tailored on the spot.
Food Menu
Attaboy does not operate a full kitchen and offers minimal food service. Guests may occasionally be offered light bar snacks, such as:
- Mixed Nuts
- Olives
- Crackers or bar crisps
The focus here remains on the liquid craft, with food playing a supporting role only.
Price Level
Attaboy offers premium cocktails at a mid-to-high price point, typically ranging from $18–$22 per drink. While the experience is tailored and exclusive, pricing remains consistent with other top-tier New York bars. There is no minimum spend, and gratuity is appreciated for the bespoke service provided.
Awards & Recognition
Attaboy has earned a spot on The World’s 50 Best Bars list numerous times and is considered one of the most influential bars of the modern cocktail era. It has received acclaim from The New York Times, Bon Appétit, Esquire, and Drinks International, and its founders are frequently cited among the pioneers of craft cocktail culture.
